Introduction

Mr. Hassan has attained his profession's highest rating as an "A-V" rated attorney from the national legal publication Martindale Hubbell Law Directory. Mr. Hassan actively practices in the area of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Personal Injury, and Employment (including Workplace Investigations).

Alternative Dispute Resolution Experience

Mr. Hassan has represented hundreds of plaintiffs and defendants in mediations involving personal injury, employment, police misconduct and medical malpractice claims.

He is ADR Panelist for the American Arbitration Association No-Fault panel, and was a former member of the Hennepin County District Court Arbitration panel, National Arbitration Forum panel.

In 2004, Mr. Hassan became a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court Roster of Qualified Neutrals for Mediation and Arbitration. Since that time, he has successfully mediated personal injury and employment litigation claims.

In 2011, Mr. Hassan began transitioning from active litigation to mediation in the areas of personal injury, employment, employment discrimination, and police misconduct claims.

Personal Injury and Employment

In 1998 Mr. Hassan returned to Minnesota to the law firm of Hassan & Reed, Ltd. He has also represented Plaintiffs in personal injury, medical malpractice and police misconduct litigation in state and federal court. Former clients include: Northwest Airlines (n/k/a Delta Airlines), Metropolitan Council, and the University of Minnesota.

In 2002 Mr. Hassan left Hassan & Reed, Ltd. and formed Jeffrey A. Hassan, PLC (Professional Limited Liability Company). He is outside legal counsel to Minneapolis Public Schools in the areas of employment, employment discrimination, and investigation of work place claims of employee misconduct, where he performed work place investigations for the University of Minnesota, and Metropolitan Council. Mr. Hassan has obtained six figure jury verdicts in cases involving police misconduct and medical malpractice.

Tort, Med Mal and D&O Liability in Washington, D.C.

Between 1998 and 1991 he practiced law in Washington, D.C. with the law firm of Jordan & Keys, LLP where he represented State Farm Insurance Company in automobile liability claims in the District of Columbia, Howard University Hospital in medical malpractice claims, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) in director and officer liability claims, and Health Industry Manufacturers Association (HIMA) in multi-district products liability claims.

Landmark Litigation

Mr. Hassan began his legal practice in 1976. As a contract attorney to the State of Minnesota Department of Human Rights he litigated the landmark Minnesota employment discrimination case of State of Minnesota v. Continental Can, establishing employer liability for sexual harassment between co-workers. Since that time he has served as a legal counsel to numerous corporate and government entities in cases involving tort, employment, employment discrimination and work place misconduct.

Training and Teaching Experience

Mr. Hassan is a 1984 graduate of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA). He has served as an adjunct faculty member in Trial Advocacy at Howard University Law School, Washington, D.C., and Litigation Practice at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Advanced Trial Advocacy program at William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Professional Licenses and Associations

Mr. Hassan was a 2002 finalist for a Hennepin County District Court judgeship. He is currently admitted to practice in Minnesota and Arizona, and was previously admitted in Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, during his practice in Washington, D.C.

Volunteer History

Mr. Hassan has maintained several volunteer affiliations over the years including the National Urban League, Minneapolis Urban League, St. Paul Urban League, St. Paul Urban Coalition, and Ramsey County O.I.C. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the African-American Leadership Forum Education Work Group, and volunteers as a Baba at Best Academy Charter School.

He is a former member of the American Board of Trial Advocacy (ABOTA); Member of the Minnesota State Bar Association; Member Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers; Former President of the Minnesota Minority Lawyers Association, and member of the Minnesota State Bar Association Task Force on Minority Lawyer Hiring.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

We will get your mediation or arbitration scheduled as soon as possible. You will not have to wait months to have your case heard and resolved.

We will talk with you before the mediation to understand the issues that are impeding resolution of your case.

We review your arbitration or mediation materials and come to the mediation or arbitration prepared to insure the most efficient use of your time, and your client's money.

We offer separate conference rooms for up to three parties at our Executive Office Suite.

We offer refreshments and telephones to make the use of your time as comfortable and efficient as possible.

We offer affordable rates. For most cases, we charge $250/hour.

Work Place Investigations

We have conducted workplace investigations for state, regional , and local governmental agencies, including the University of Minnesota, Metropolitan Council, and Minneapolis Public Schools. We meet with the principal representatives of your organization, review documentation, including company policies and procedures, and then conduct fact finding interviews of all relevant witnesses. Upon completion of the investigation, we will conduct legal research, if necessary, and prepare a detailed confidential investigation report, with recommendations if requested.

Personal Injury

We have represented Plaintiffs and Defendants in personal injury actions, including auto accidents, police misconduct and medical malpractice claims for the past 25 years.

We have represented major liability carriers such as State Farm, American Family, and Liberty Mutual in defending claims. We have also represented injured victims, and received settlements and jury verdicts in excess of one million dollars. We provide the unique perspective of having represented parties on both sides of the table, and can put that experience to work for you.
